THE LITTLE PRINT STUDIO / FIELD NOTES
Which digital artwork file fits your frame?
Digital artwork downloads often include several files because frames come in different proportions. Start with the intended printed dimensions, then select a file with a matching aspect ratio. A similar-looking filename is not enough to confirm the fit.
Common ratio families
- 2:3: 4 × 6, 8 × 12 and 12 × 18 inches.
- 3:4: 6 × 8, 9 × 12 and 12 × 16 inches.
- 4:5: 8 × 10 and 16 × 20 inches.
- A-series: A5, A4 and A3, approximately 1:√2. These do not exactly match the other families.
Match the shape, then the resolution
For an 8 × 10 inch print, choose a 4:5 file if available. A 2400 × 3000 pixel file supplies 300 PPI at that size. A 1200 × 1500 file has the same shape, but supplies only 150 PPI. Matching proportions prevents cropping; enough pixels supports the intended resolution.
If the file does not match
Use the calculator’s Fill preview to see what is removed, or Fit to show the whole artwork with borders. If the design contains text or a decorative edge, preserving the whole image is often preferable. Follow the seller’s printing instructions and keep the original downloaded files.
This calculator supports raster photos and artwork in JPG, PNG or WebP. A vector PDF can behave differently when enlarged, so use the creator’s specifications or ask your print provider to inspect it.
